As you all might notice, I use Windows 7. I have about five programs that are not compatible with it. But this is not a big problem in Windows 7. All you have to do is to change the way the programs start. So, if the program is compatible with Windows XP, you can choose XP mode and successfully launch it in Windows 7. Here’s how to do it:

About a week ago, I got Windows 7 from Microsoft. As I said before (http://www.theitcorner.com/2009/08/15/windows-7-adjust-brightness-2/) I couldn’t adjust my laptop’s screen’s brightness. So I thought, “OK, when I will get the official release of Windows 7, I will be able to adjust the brightness.” Well, guess what? I was wrong. It took me an hour to solve the problem. All you have to is basically a)Install the driver for Vista. b)Update BIOS. I decided to find a driver for my laptop (Lenovo 3000 G530). I do not know what users of other laptops should do, but I believe it’s pretty similar for all laptops. So, here are the steps:

1. uninstall all intel display drivers in programs (add/remove section of control panel)

2. get in to device manager and uninstall all display drivers

3. DO NOT RESTART YET

4. download intel display driver for vista edition here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-71004

5. install the driver you just download. you should get a message from windows saying the installation failed; in that case select ‘reinstall using recommended settings’. now it should install properly*. after install is done wait a few minutes for windows 7 to register the new driver. then go ahead and restart.

6. now you should be able to adjust brightness using FN + F10/F11 (for lenovo G530)

*if by any chance you still fail at installing the vista driver, locate the extract files and use windows compatibility mode (vista) to run the setup.exe. the files are usually extracted to C:\drivers\vista\intel.

* if you still cannot adjust brightness, download lenovo hotkey driver. just google it.

* this is for lenovo g530 only (model 4446 specifically)

I could not install it properly until I used “Vista Compatible Mode”. To use it, just right click on the setup file, press properties, and then choose Windows version you want to use. So, now I finally got it working
