GMail phone calls

GMail is letting users make voice calls. Anyone with GMail can call any phone number within US or Canada for free through the end of the year. You can also link your GMail and Google Voice account, but you won’t need a Google Voice account unless you make international calls. But if your accounts are linked, then your inbox will be notified when someone calls. Calls made to outside your country will cost $0.02 per each minute.

The giveaway is still on. Hurry up it will end soon!!!

USB Jailbreak for PS3

A USB stick can now jailbreak a Play Station 3 Fat or Slim or at least that was claimed by www.psjailbreak.com. PS Jailbreak, as they calling it, will allow users to play copied games from a system’s hard drive or even an external drive. In addition, the software will allow users to run non-sony approved software. The hackers claim this won’t violate your warranty, and you can actually pre-order it right now for $100.00 -$150.00 (depends on what country you live in).

By the way guys, the giveaway is still on until August 30th! So hurry up! :)

Review: Macally PowerLink 3-in-1 iPod / iPhone Battery Pack

PowerLink USB Adapter for iPhone is a convenient three-in-one device that any iPhone or iPod user would find handy. The PowerLink combines a USB memory stick for storing files, a 30-pin cable for syncing your iPhone/iPod, and a charger (actually a power supplier) with a built-in rechargeable battery.

The battery pack itself is pretty small, about the same size as a regular USB stick (about 5 x 1.5 x 1.6 inches to be specific). It’s very portable and lightweight. It has a 30-pin connector to connect your iPhone or iPod for emergency power and/or connect it to your computer for data sync. On the other end, it has a USB connector to recharge the battery or use it as a USB memory stick (which has 2GB memory capacity).

When I was buying the accessory, I expected it to CHARGE my Apple device instead of just powering it up. This is probably due to the small size of the battery (270mAh). But this is not a problem for me at all. iPhone’s battery life is about 6-10 hours, and PowerLink provides an additional hour of talk. So I would say it’s pretty decent (come on guys, what did you expect from such small device? Or would you rather carry a car battery around and hook it up with your iPhone when your phone’s dying? It WILL have a lot of power.. ;) )

Overall, the iPhone/iPod accessory is very useful for heavy iPhone/iPod users. You can buy it at Amazon just for $21.99

How to: Flash on your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad (kind of)

I’m going to explain you how to install app called “Frash” that will allow you to play Flash content on your Apple devices. The first step is to jailbreak your Apple device, which is now legal. To find out how to jailbreak your device follow this step. Now let’s get to it.

You have a jailbroken device. First, open Cydia app.

Select the “Manage” tab, and then select “Sources”. You’ll see a list of sources. Hit the Edit button, and then hit the Add button. Enter the following URL: http://repo.benm.at Once youre done with that, tap on “Add source”. It will update, and when it’s done, hit “Return to Cydia”. Go to the search tab and then find “frash” and install that application.

Reboot your Apple device, and when it’s up and running, you’ll have the ability to view some, but not all flash content on your Apple device. It will display flash advertises, and most likely will not display or will give you an error message while trying to watch a video in a flash based video player. Enjoy :)

Own opinion: MetroTwit

I’ve used TweetDeck, and for me it’s too complicated. The user interface is pretty simple, but at the same time those columns are just confusing. What does each do? What does it display? These are some questions that I came up with when I started using TweetDeck. When I open TweetDeck, my screen looks very busy and complicated. But today, I’m gonna talk about MetroTwit. I came across this post on OTN the other day, and decided to try it out.

I really liked the design. Yes, it does look like TweetDeck, but I would say it does not look as complicated as TweetDeck. When I opened TweetDeck for the very first time, I had to get used to the interface. When I opened MetroTwit, I just knew what to do. Thumbs up for copying Zune’s interface ;) The interface looks very very simple. Besides the UI, the update system is really good, and I love that it has Windows 7 taskbar integration. You can see how many tweets are unread without even opening it up.

Now memory. This is the only thing I hate about MetroTwit. It really depends on what else except MetroTwit is opened. At the time when I had opened Google Chrome and MetroTwit, it was using only 98,586 K of memory. Now, when I have a bunch of other applications opened, it using 385,248 K. So it does take a lot of memory. Unfortunately. This is probably due to using Microsoft .NET 4.0 and Windows Presentation Foundation 4 frameworks.

Overall, the application gets slow sometimes when many other applications are running at the same time. The UI is very clear to a first time user. I personally wouldn’t use MetroTwit for only one reason: I don’t really see the purpose of standalone Twitter clients, when you can just use Twitter on the web. It’s just a waste of memory. IMHO.

Make your own magazine-like subscription reader

There are a plenty of users on the internet who are subscribed to their favourite blog’s feed. You may read your subscriptions via email, Google Reader, and other services. If you’re using Google Reader to read your subscriptions, it looks pretty boring.. Well at least to me.

If you’re subscribed to many feeds (like me), it would be more comfortable and more efficient to read your subscriptions in a magazine-like view. The service that lets you do so is called Feedly. It’s really easy to use it. All you have to do is sign in with your Gmail account or create a new Gmail account (what takes less than two minutes. Really). And the website will do its job. Your new subscription reader will like something like this:

The service is really useful for those who are subscribed to many feeds. It makes your subscription reading experience very effecient. Try it out! It’s free!

”Feedly really rocks as a way to track and share news”

Complete Guide: How To Jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G on iOS 4

Before you jump to the jailbreak procedures, please read through the points carefully:

  • As usual, before kicking off the jailbreak, remember to backup all your iPhone data via iTunes. You can simply connect the iPhone to your computer and sync all the data. This step is crucial. In any case you are stuck in the jailbreak process, you can always restore your iPhone back to the original state.
  • Though JailbreakMe should work with iPhone OS v3.x, this guide is intended for those running iOS 4. So, I suppose you have upgraded to iOS 4.0 / 4.0.1. If not, please upgrade it via iTunes.
  • JailbreakMe should also work with iPhone that has been jailbroken with blackra1n or Spirit. But before using JailbreakMe, please restore the iPhone to iOS 4.0 / 4.01 via iTunes.
  • JailbreakMe will not hacktivate your iPhone. Your iPhone should be activated before using the browser-based jailbreak tool. You can either purchase an official SIM card or simply borrow it from your friend to activate the iPhone. Alternatively, you can also try out the phonebook SIM card to activate it.

Jailbreaking iPhone with JailbreakMe

1. As JailbreakMe is a browser-based jailbreak tool, no software download is required. All you need to do is to launch the mobile Safari on your iPhone and point it to http://www.jailbreakme.com.

Tip: If the above link doesn’t work, you can also try out http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com.

2. Next, you can simply slide the “slide to jailbreak” slider to kick off the jailbreak process.

3. The whole jailbreak process will take several minutes to complete. Once done, the tool prompts you that cydia has been added to your iPhone.

That’s it. Is it the simplest jailbreak tool you have ever used?

After jailbreaking… and you need to unlock

For iPhone 3GS and 3G user, if you need to unlock the iPhone, you can launch cydia and install ultrasn0w.

For iPhone 4 user, the iPhone Dev team will release an updated version of ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 4 in these two days.

Not Working? Try again!

For some reasons, you may be stuck after you kick off the jailbreak process. In that case, you can simply reboot your iPhone and go through the whole process again. Usually, the jailbreak should work normally for the next trial.

If you have successfully jailbroken your iPhone, I hope you can leave us comment and share the iPhone model & OS version. You are also welcome to leave us questions in case you find any difficulties during the jailbreak process.

Enjoy!

Apple always does everything the other way around

Yesterday, at the Apple iPhone 4 press conference, Steve Jobs have said that all phones have an issue with dropping calls and losing signal.  Here’s what RIM and Nokia said:

RIM’s co-CEO’s Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie:

“Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM’s customers don’t need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple.”

Nokia:

“Antenna design is a complex subject and has been a core competence at Nokia for decades, across hundreds of phone models. Nokia was the pioneer in internal antennas; the Nokia 8810, launched in 1998, was the first commercial phone with this feature.

Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying human behavior, including how people hold their phones for calls, music playing, web browsing and so on. As you would expect from a company focused on connecting people, we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict.

In general, antenna performance of a mobile device/phone may be affected with a tight grip, depending on how the device is held. That’s why Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand. Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying how people hold their phones and allows for this in designs, for example by having antennas both at the top and bottom of the phone and by careful selection of materials and their use in the mechanical design.”

It’s funny how Nokia says, “we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict”. So, does Apple do have it other way around? I think they do, and always have been doing that. If you want something that works and has infinite options, you should get a pc.

“We neeed two buttons on the mouse so that the user will have options. PC = OK, but give them the option of having more buttons, programable even if they want. MAC = No that won’t look good, and it might confuse our sheep”
